This theory very much applies to the fitting and mounting of the cockpit panels. You may recall from an earlier post I was in a dilemma over panel overlap.<br />

Couple this with the fact that the complete cockpit area will first be covered with thermal and sound deadening material before being carpeted means that any panel seams will be covered. Areas which are visible include the outer splash panel areas in the wheel wells, thus I decided that these should have the cleaner look by having all mounting tabs overlapping in the cockpit.<br />

Installation and fitting of the cockpit panels has been the most challenging so far, so it’s refreshing to think these are the last panels which require fitting prior to the body being fitted.<br />

The splash panels are a little like jigsaw pieces, however after offering up each panel there is a natural order to how these should be installed.<br />

Interestingly mk3build.com and the Factory Five manual conflict with regard to panel overlap and at this time please don’t take the pictures as an accurate installation as some panels are only shown as a rough orientation to their final position. Later posts will define what I find to be the best orientation.<br />

The rear firewall may require centering as the temporary positioning at the factory does not necessarily mean this panel is centered.<br />

It will probably take another 10 to 12 hours to finish the final fitting of all the cockpit panels and transmission tunnel cover which will be installed as a removable cover to facilitate maintenance and access to the rear wiring harness.<br />

The fuel regulator was also adjusted to 43psi. After fixing the fuel leaks the regulator pressure was hovering around 60psi and the FAST system suggest 43psi which is good for up to 550HP.<br /><br />During the 30 minute session the engine was exercised through a number of RPM ranges as the FAST system continued its adaptive learning. At 140 degrees the FAST adaptive learning kick in, at this point the engine quickly started to settle at 850 RPM with smooth acceleration.<br /><br />At 190 degrees the thermostat opened, this quickly leveled the engine temperature at 184 degrees for the rest of the initial testing. Note: the water temperature gauge supplied is in degrees Celsius, 184F is approximately 82C.<br /> <br />Oil pressure at 850 RPM was a constant 55psi dropping to 40psi at higher RPM’s, the voltage remained at a steady 14 volts, fuel pressure is set at 43psi.<br /><br />The engine was run through a heat cycle of approximately 30 minutes. A small bracket was fabricated and riveted to the ¾” box down post to support the base of the canister (the aftermarket canister has a molded slot at the base which the bracket clips into).<br /><br />Vapor lines were run from the gas tank breather and rear axle breather into the canister. As you can see from the video, the test went to plan.<br /><br />The new engine start date is December 23rd, a fitting date as this will be 1 year since the car was delivered. The unit supplied is a standard Ford stock item and as the parking brake indicator will not be used this sensor was removed, as was the rubber boot from the cable linkage which fits through a hole in the floor on a stock Mustang.<br /><br />Some of alterations were required, a small tab on the TKO600 gearbox was cut off to clear the linkage mechanism, and similarly the mounting bracket required slight surgery to clear the ratchet. Finally the tab which operates the parking brake indicator light required filing to clear the mounting braked at full stroke.<br /><br />Note: Do not pull the horse shoe pin until you have mounted the parking brake for the last time as this releases the automatic adjuster to take up slack in the system. The standard Mk3.1 emergency brake cables supplied are for a drum brake setup and so as you can see from the picture reach past the T bar. After checking the EFI wiring harness and the fact that the passenger foot box is smaller the decision became easy to select the passenger side header as the location of the CO2 sensor. The ideal pinion angle is when the angle of an imaginary center line from the transmission output and an imaginary center line from the differential input are parallel when under load. This angle can be zero, positive or a negative angle, but must be parallel for the universal joints to function correct. An incorrect pinion angle induces premature wear and “knocking” under load. <br /><br />See pinion angle example (this assumes a 1 degree offset).<br /><br />For the angles to be correct a differential offset angle needs to be accounted for when setting the alignment to compensate for rotational twist which occurs in the differential under acceleration. Basically the input flange of the transmission kicks upwards under load as the transmission tries to rotate around the axle. In the picture you can see bubble wrap around the lifting chain to protect the valve covers and inlet manifold, bubble wrap on the hydraulic cylinder as the steep transmission angle required results in the pulley’s hitting the ram. Radiator mounting bar and 4” cross tube all benefit from protection.<br /><br />3. The transmission if aligned correctly should just slide in place. It took me 3 attempts because the input shaft requires rotating to align with the spline on the clutch.<br /> <br />Bolts should not be used to jack the transmission in place, the easiest method for aligning the spline’s is to place the transmission in gear and rotate the drive shaft, wiggling the clutch yoke also helps center the input shaft.<br /> <br />The Quick Time bell housing came with two sleeves which accurately align and support the nose of the transmission into the bell housing. Check that the correct one is being used and make sure this is inserted before assembling. Bolts were tightened to 50 foot pound of torque and marked with torque lock.
